Essential Channels
16 (156.8 MHz) Distress, Safety & Calling Universal emergency channel. Monitored by Coast Guard and all vessels at all times. Required by law for most vessels. Establish contact here, then switch to a working channel.
9 Recreational Boat-to-Boat Calling Alternative calling channel to reduce traffic on CH 16. Radio Checks
Bridge & Navigation Channels
13 Bridge-to-Bridge Navigation Safety Used to contact bridges, commercial vessel traffic, and marine construction crews. Monitored by nearly all marine operations.
14 Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) Primary VTS channel for New York Harbor. Important for NY/NJ waterway transit.

Key Rule of Thumb
Always initiate contact on CH 16, then agree to switch to a working channel. For Hudson River and NY Harbor transit, monitor CH 16, 13, and 14 simultaneously if your radio supports tri-watch.

Local Weather

How to read this map

  • What it shows: a forecast of rain and thunderstorms for the area around the marker (the Hudson at the George Washington Bridge, a few miles east of the Hackensack River). It is a forecast model, not live radar.
  • Colors: clear/grey areas are dry. Colored areas are forecast rain — light blue and green for light showers, yellow and orange for steady to heavy rain, red and purple for downpours. Thunderstorm risk is marked on top of the rain colors. The color bar in the bottom-right corner gives the exact rainfall rate for each color.
  • Time: the timeline along the bottom shows which hour you are looking at. Press play, or drag the timeline, to watch showers move through. Use “View Forecast For” above to jump ahead a day at a time.
  • Pinpoint forecast: click anywhere on the map for that spot’s forecast. Wind is shown in knots and temperature in °F.
  • On the water: if orange, red or storm symbols are moving toward the marker during your trip window, expect poor visibility and gusty, shifting winds — plan to be off the water or tied up before they arrive.
